Police in Molo sub-county have recovered stolen property and apprehended 14 individuals implicated in theft and destruction of property of MP Kuria Kimani during the youth led anti-government protests last week.
Molo Sub-County Police Commander (SCPC), Timon Odingo, confirmed the incident saying that they have successfully recovered a portion of the stolen property and added that the search is still ongoing until all culprits are brought to book.
“Among the items recovered are four cows out of the seven that were reported missing, with one already slaughtered. Additionally, various household items including duvets, tables, chairs, electronics and a printer have been recovered as well,” he said.
Odingo expressed concerns over the possible involvement of rogue politicians in inciting youths and instigating the chaos that led to the theft and subsequent protests warning further that they will not be spared if found involved in such criminal activities.
“We suspect that the theft and subsequent disturbances were orchestrated by political interests,” remarked Odingo. “Our investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to bringing all perpetrators to book, regardless of their status,” he added.
The situation escalated when protesters from Nakuru and other areas joined the demonstrations, turning what initially seemed like peaceful protests to destruction of property.
He cautioned against the escalation of violence and looting, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order in the region during such occurrences.
“We commend the initial peaceful protests by Gen Z but regret the infiltration by outsiders that resulted in violence and damage to property,” said Odingo. “Anyone found looting or participating in the destruction of property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he warned.
Local residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities and assuring the community of ongoing efforts to stabilize the situation and prevent further unrest.
As the investigation progresses, the 14 suspects are set to be arraigned in court to face charges related to theft and vandalism.
The recovery of stolen property marks a significant milestone in restoring calm in Molo, even as police continue to pursue leads and maintain a strong presence to prevent further escalation of disturbances.
