Thousands of lawyers across the country held a Purple Ribbon March on Friday to condemn the brutal killing of advocate Kyalo Mbobu, who was murdered in cold blood by an assassin two days earlier.
In Nairobi, the peaceful procession began at 9 a.m. at the Milimani Law Courts from where the advocates marched to Vigilance House via Kenyatta Avenue to present their grievances to Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), led by its president Faith Odhiambo, demanded a speedy and transparent investigation into Mbobu’s killing and called for protection of those handling sensitive cases.
The members of the legal fraternity appealed to the government to put an end to the rising cases of gang-style executions, where killers rarely pay for their actions.
“This incident [Mbobu’s killing] and other acts of violence, intimidation and retribution against Advocates of the High Court of Kenya represents a damning test to the administration of justice,” LSK said in a statement.
Lawyers from other regions, including the Rift Valley Law Society, Kisumu, and various LSK branches, also held peaceful processions to show solidarity over the loss of their colleague.
Purple Ribbon March is a symbolic protest often organised by legal professionals to raise awareness and demand justice following the killing or harassment of members of their colleagues.
The colour purple is used as a symbol of mourning, solidarity, dignity, and justice.
