Rigathi Gachagua has hinted that Kalonzo Musyoka could emerge as the United Opposition’s presidential flag bearer in the 2027 General Election, marking a notable shift from his earlier position.
Speaking during the opposition’s tour of the Ukambani region, Gachagua praised Musyoka’s leadership potential and rallied the Kamba community behind him. “The Kamba community is the one that will redeem Kenya from the current administration because your vote is the most trusted and definite in the Republic of Kenya. The Kamba vote is a vote you can take to the bank,” he told residents during a rally.
He further urged the community to solidify Musyoka’s political base through the Wiper Democratic Movement, saying: “The only way to make Kalonzo respectable is the Wiper party. You should vote Wiper candidates from top to bottom so that political traitors can suffocate once he denies them tickets.”
The former deputy president called for an aggressive voter registration drive across Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties, targeting at least four million voters ahead of the 2027 polls. “I know that once you list four million votes, we shall have a head start of four million votes plus my vote included even before the 2027 General Election begins,” he said.
Gachagua also criticised leaders from the region aligned with President Ruto, accusing them of undermining Musyoka’s leadership. “You need to send home MCAs and MPs who are undermining Mr Musyoka’s leadership by running errands for President Ruto. How can Kalonzo succeed when traitors of the community are roaming free?” he posed.
He stressed the importance of loyalty among elected leaders, adding: “A leader is only as strong as the people around him. Unless you provide Kalonzo with enough foot soldiers who are loyal to him and the community, he will not succeed.”
In a separate development, Musyoka sustained pressure on the government, raising concerns over reports of bodies discovered in mass graves in Kericho County.
Other opposition leaders echoed calls for unity and increased voter participation. Mutula Kilonzo Jnr. urged residents to take advantage of the ongoing registration exercise, while Wavinya Ndeti warned that disunity could weaken the opposition’s chances in 2027.
Former presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i avoided weighing in on the choice of flag bearer but called on the region to rally behind the opposition.
The opposition caravan is expected to continue its tour across Ukambani as leaders intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election.
