Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Monday over remarks he allegedly made during a public rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.
The legislator was taken into custody after spending the night at the Royal Media Services (RMS) premises, where he remained following an appearance on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme. Kaguchia said police officers had surrounded the media house with the intention of arresting him.
“After my Kiririmbi show this evening, a contingent of police officers surrounded Royal Media Studios and erected roadblocks with the intention of arresting me. I will not be intimidated whatsoever,” he wrote on social media.
Speaking to Citizen TV before his arrest, Kaguchia said the investigation stemmed from remarks he made during a political rally on Saturday, which he claimed had been taken out of context.
“I saw considerable attention yesterday from the government regarding remarks I made on Saturday at a political rally, which were portrayed as inflammatory. That is an issue that falls under the purview of the NCIC,” he said.
The MP maintained that he had not received any formal summons and said he was prepared to cooperate with the relevant authorities.
“I have not received any summons. All I have seen are social media posts from Itumbi and some government-allied MPs, which I believe were intended to support a particular narrative. I have no problem presenting myself to the NCIC,” he said.
The remarks under investigation were made during a political rally in Kieni, where Kaguchia spoke about the 2027 General Election. Authorities are examining whether the statements amounted to inflammatory speech.
Regional DCI Commander Daniel Kandie confirmed that the MP would be questioned further. Although he was initially expected to be processed at the DCI regional offices in Milimani, he was later transferred to the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.
