Father John Maina of Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu was murdered in what may have been a targeted attack over a donation made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has revealed.
According to the DCI, on May 15, 2025, Fr. Maina was found along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway by a motorcycle rider near a bus stage, with bruises on the left side of his head.
He told the rider that he had been abducted from Nyahururu.
“It has been established that Fr. Maina was being trailed by some individuals who were demanding a share of the money allegedly given to him after he presided over the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Ceremony attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” reported the DCI on their X account.
The DCI added that the rider took the priest to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, where upon arrival he was found to have visible injuries, including bleeding bruises on the side of his head.
“Tragically, despite the efforts of medical personnel, Fr. Maina passed away while undergoing treatment, just minutes after being admitted,” the DCI added.
Contrary to initial suspicions that the priest was murdered and his body dumped along the highway, the DCI confirmed that he died while receiving treatment at St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital.
Detectives are also investigating reports that Fr. Maina had previously expressed concerns for his safety. However, he had not filed any official report with the police.
The DCI urges the public to remain calm as investigations continue. Anyone with further information is encouraged to report to the nearest police station.
