Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is once again staring at impeachment, less than a year after the Senate saved him from removal over various allegations, including gross violation of the Constitution.
The fresh motion, tabled on Wednesday by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accuses the governor of authorising the irregular payment of Sh85 million to contractors for services not rendered.
It also cites alleged misuse of taxpayer and donor funds earmarked for development projects.
Speaker Patrick Mutai has approved the motion.
Rogony claims the county paid in advance for goods and services that were never delivered, even as it grapples with Sh1.1 billion in pending bills.
Dr Mutai, a first-term UDA governor, is now expected to appear before the assembly to respond to the charges. MCAs will then debate and vote on whether to impeach him.
This marks Rogony’s second attempt to unseat the governor. In October 2023, Mutai was impeached by 31 out of 47 MCAs, but the motion failed in the Senate after it ruled the threshold of 32 votes had not been met. Sixteen MCAs boycotted the session in support of the governor.
The earlier motion cited gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, misuse of public funds, violations of finance laws, and allegations of indecent conduct, including claims that he coerced a woman into unprotected sex.
The Senate later cleared Mutai, with 34 senators voting against his removal and 10 in support.
