Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, the prime suspect in the Kware murders, and 12 Eritrean nationals escaped from Gigiri Police Station early Tuesday morning in a shocking breach of security involving cutting through a wire mesh and scaling a perimeter wall.
The breakout was noticed when the authorities woke the suspects for their morning tea. Inmates had cut through a wire mesh and climbed over a perimeter wall to make good their escape.
Director of DCI Mohamed Amin confirmed the escape, stating, “It is unfortunate this has happened, but we are pursuing the matter for action.”
A manhunt has been launched to recapture Jumaisi, a high-profile suspect who was awaiting plea-taking on Friday.
He was detained alongside Amos Momanyi and Moses Ogembo after a ruling by a court last Friday to have them detained for seven more days following an application by the prosecution for a 21-day extension to detain them. The application was partially accepted.
Jumaisi was left behind at Gigiri Police Station as his co-accused, Amos Momanyi and Moses Ogembo, were transferred to Muthaiga Police Station.
They were supposed to remain in custody until August 26 when the case was set to be mentioned for review.
During a court appearance before Makadara Principal Magistrate Irine Gichobi, Jumaisi was described as a key suspect with allegations of confessing to the murders of up to 42 women, although he denies the charges.
The prosecution is still going through the exhibits, including the recovered body parts from the quarry, to ensure more charges are preferred.
The investigating officer revealed that so far, six victims have been identified, and the DPP will further direct how the case should proceed.
