Members of the County Assembly in Embu County have called for swift investigations to unravel the mysterious death of Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve Kimanzi, who died on Tuesday.

The ward representatives in a joint statement expressed fears over their security suspecting foul play in the demise of the vocal MCA who they alleged may have been silenced for exposing graft at the County Government of Nairobi.

Speaking during a plenary session on Wednesday, the MCAs unanimously called for a thorough probe into his death, claiming that several other outspoken leaders have died under mysterious circumstances in the past.

Makima Ward MCA Philip Nzangi who kicked off the debate, said unconfirmed reports indicate that the MCA was associated with collecting signatures to impeach and advocating for forensic audit of the Governor of Nairobi Johnson Sakaja on accountability issues.

They also questioned why the Government had not considered giving them security yet they perform the risky role of oversight over county funds running into billions of shillings.

“The work we do is very risky and the government does not believe in providing MCAs with security yet we are performing a similar task to the Members of the National Assembly,” he said.

Nominated MCA Agnes Gakungugu regretted that their oversight role was being misconstrued as a witch-hunt of top government officials.

Kagaari North MCA Mucangi Mwariama said the suspicious death of their colleague will not dampen their resolve of ensuring proper service delivery, adherence to integrity and prudent utilization of public resources.

“The sole purpose of our existence as leaders is to safeguard public resources from misuse which should not warrant actions as harsh as killing,” said nominated MCA Yvonne Mate.

They vowed to continue championing for accountability and good governance amid allegations of intimidation, victimization and elimination of anti-corruption crusaders.
