The High Court in Nairobi has postponed the verdict in the murder case involving Joshua Irungu, known as Jowie, and former TV anchor Jacqueline Maribe to December 15, 2023.
High Court Judge Grace Nzioka, who was supposed to deliver the ruling, fell ill, leading to the delay.
Jowie and Maribe are on trial for the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani, who was found dead with her throat slit in her Nairobi home in September 2018.
In her closing submissions, lead prosecutor Gikuhi Gichuhi urged the judge to convict the duo, citing evidence supported by witness statements and DNA analysis of blood samples taken from Jowie’s clothing.
According to the prosecution, Maribe conspired with Jowie to create a false narrative of a robbery to cover up the murder. The Government Chemist’s report showed Kimani’s blood on Jowie’s clothes.
However, the defense, represented by lawyers Prof Hassan Nandwa for Jowie and Katwa Kigen for Maribe, argued that the prosecution had not proven its case.
Nandwa emphasized the lack of direct evidence against Jowie, while Kigen noted that none of the witnesses had implicated Maribe in the murder.
The postponement raises anticipation as either Lady Justice Grace Nzioka will convict the defendants or they will be acquitted. The case’s resolution now hinges on the upcoming verdict in December.
