The High Court has sentenced Naftali Kinuthia to 40 years in prison for the murder of Moi University medical student Ivy Wangeci on April 9, 2019.
On October 26th, Justice Reuben Githinji concluded that the prosecution had convincingly established the murder charges against the 33-year-old IT expert.
The court in delivering the verdict, scrutinized Kinuthia’s defense, highlighting the absence of credible evidence supporting his claims of an intimate relationship with the victim.
“Even the text messages reviewed did not prove evidence of an intimate relationship, and the accused did not also prove a sexual relationship with the deceased,” noted Justice Githinji.
Kinuthia, who asserted that the murder was a result of a romantic relationship gone awry, now faces the consequences of his actions. The judge granted him an opportunity to present his mitigation before the final sentencing on November 22.
Expressing remorse for the tragic incident, Kinuthia admitted to being overwhelmed by anger over what he characterized as a failed love relationship.
“This is an incident that I have regretted forever. After thinking about it and reflecting, I knew it would not have happened since there were many ways to get around the situation without causing the death of an innocent person,” Kinuthia conveyed to the court.
The verdict brings a sense of closure to the prolonged legal proceedings and serves as a reminder of the importance of justice in cases of violence and harm, particularly in instances where relationships take a deadly turn.
