The Nairobi County Assembly is pushing to rename a prominent city road in honour of the late Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, a towering figure in Kenya’s legal and human rights circles.
Mr. Nowrojee, who died in April at the age of 84, is remembered for his strong commitment to justice and the Constitution. The idea to honour him was brought forward by Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege, who asked the Assembly on Tuesday to help keep his memory alive.
“He often offered his services pro bono whenever the occasions so required. He believed in the sanctity of the Constitution, even in the most turbulent political climate,” Ms Waithera said in her address. She further described the late lawyer as a “patriotic man of letters” who had made a “huge contribution to the nation”.

The proposed renaming falls under the county’s official policy on street naming and property addressing. This framework lays out a clear path: once a motion is approved by the Assembly, the County Executive is required to implement the change within three months of receiving formal communication.
“Naming a prominent road in Nairobi after him would serve as a fitting tribute to his lasting legacy… his contributions will be remembered and celebrated by future generations,” said Ms Waithera.
The final decision now rests with the County Executive, under Governor Johnson Sakaja. f approved, this change would be similar to when Mbagathi Way was renamed Raila Odinga Way in 2021, to honour the former Prime Minister’s role in the country.
The proposal aims to make sure Nowrojee is remembered for his impact on Kenya and shows a rising respect for people who helped build the nation through their ideas, values, and public service.
