Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has been charged with two counts of conflict of interest and one count of unlawful acquisition of public property.
Natembeya appeared before Magistrate Charles Ondieki at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Natembeya is accused of receiving indirect benefits from companies that traded with the county government between January 2023 and April 2025.
In the first count, it is alleged that between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2025, Natembeya acquired an indirect interest of Sh1,127,900 from Mercy Chelangat, the director of Lyma Agro Science Limited and the proprietor of Maria Stores, both of which had traded with the county government.
In another count, Natembeya is accused of receiving Ksh. 2,124,668 from Emmanuel Wafula Masungo, the beneficial owner of Easterly Winds Limited, a company that also holds contracts with the county.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has strongly opposed bail for the accused. Prosecutors argued that the governor and his co-accused are in positions of influence and could interfere with investigations or intimidate witnesses. They also pointed to the fact that Natembeya’s supporters had previously attacked EACC and DCI officers.
Several political leaders and lawyers stood in unison with Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya today at the Milimani Courts. The leaders included Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, and former Tongaren MP Eseli Simiyu.
