Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has dismissed his removal as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), calling the decision illegitimate and insisting he will continue in the role.
Speaking at a Nairobi press conference on Thursday, Mr Sifuna accused the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) of sidelining him through what he called an unconstitutional process. “I remain a loyal member and the duly elected Secretary General of the ODM party,” he said.
The senator, who has faced ongoing factional disputes within ODM, reaffirmed his dedication to the party’s principles and the broader fight for democracy in Kenya. “I remain committed to the struggle for a fair, just, and democratic Kenya,” he added.
His removal on Wednesday evening comes after months of internal tension following the death of ODM leader Raila Odinga. Mr Sifuna argued that the recent leadership changes—including Oburu Odinga’s installation as party leader—broke the rules outlined in the ODM constitution.
“The new party leader was installed unprocedurally and unconstitutionally,” Mr Sifuna said, criticising what he called shortcuts and unlawful ethics. He also suggested the move was linked to disagreements over the party’s stance toward President William Ruto.

He claimed he wasn’t given a chance to defend himself before the NEC made its decision. “I was not given a chance to defend myself,” he said, calling the process a breach of party rules.
Despite being ousted, Mr Sifuna says he will continue to serve ODM and protect its ideals. “I remain committed to the party and its founding principles. I will continue defending ODM and the interests of its members,” he said.
Political observers are watching closely to see how ODM handles its leadership battle. Analysts say the party’s approach in the coming weeks could shape its future influence and determine how internal rivalries are resolved.
