A man suspected of being the shooter in the murder of Kasipul MP Ongondo Were was arrested on Sunday by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The suspect, identified as Isaac Kuria, alias Kush, was apprehended in Isebania, near the Kenya-Tanzania border, while allegedly planning to flee the country. He was arrested at a local lodging in the town as he prepared for his escape.
Kuria is believed to have travelled to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), where he trailed MP Were with the intention of assassinating him on the same day. He reportedly cornered the MP at a traffic stop on Ngong Road, where he fatally shot him.
After the killing, Kuria is believed to have fled to Mihango, where he disposed of the murder weapon. The weapon is now in the custody of DCI detectives.
Following the murder, Kuria reportedly fled to Narok on a motorbike to evade capture, before boarding a public service vehicle to Isebania. There, he was in communication with a relative in Tanzania, arranging for his escape.
Kuria was found in the company of another individual, who was also arrested. The two were transferred to Nairobi and were expected to appear at the JKIA Law Courts on Monday.
This brings the total number of suspects in custody in connection with the murder of MP Were to 12. Among the suspects are Were’s driver and bodyguard, businessman and politician Phillip Aroko, and Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng.
The DCI is still searching for other suspects involved in the planning and execution of the murder. MP Ongondo Were was shot on Wednesday, April 30, and rushed to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
