A day after receiving strong backing from Rigathi Gachagua as a potential United Opposition flag bearer for 2027, Kalonzo Musyoka escalated his campaign in Ukambani, targeting local allies of William Ruto.
Speaking during rallies in Makueni County, Musyoka delivered a stark warning to political opponents:
“Anyone who will stand between Kalonzo and his 2027 presidential dream will be cursed until his seventh generation.”
The former vice-president urged residents to reject leaders aligned with the President, framing them as obstacles to both his ambitions and the community’s influence. The move came after Gachagua had endorsed Musyoka, calling for unity behind him and urging the Kamba community to reject what he described as “traitors” supporting the ruling administration.
Musyoka singled out several local politicians accused of disloyalty, including Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna, and others, hinting at possible replacements in constituencies where allegiance to the government was seen as a betrayal.
In response, Mutuse dismissed the attacks, accusing the opposition of lacking a coherent agenda. “They have no agenda. Their speeches are about Mutuse this, Mutuse that and Ruto this, Ruto that. We shall beat them very early in the morning,” he said.
Other opposition figures reinforced Musyoka’s campaign. Gachagua reiterated: “You cannot love Kalonzo and traitors at the same time. You have to kick out President Ruto’s allies in this region so that Mr Musyoka can earn the respect he deserves.”
Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala described Musyoka as the opposition’s strongest candidate to deny President Ruto a second term, while Mutula Kilonzo Jr. emphasised the need for widespread voter registration to strengthen the opposition’s prospects.
Musyoka also addressed broader governance concerns, calling on the President to release young people facing charges linked to last year’s anti-government protests.
The opposition tour, originally planned for five days, was cut short after Gachagua announced a return to Nairobi to support traders affected by demolitions at Gikomba Market.
“We are going back to Nairobi to stand with the traders affected by the demolition of the Gikomba Market,” he said. Governor Kilonzo assured supporters that visits to Kitui and Machakos counties would resume in the coming weeks, signalling that the opposition remains committed to consolidating support in Ukambani ahead of 2027.
