Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has addressed the endorsement of Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro as President William Ruto’s running mate in 2027 by a section of Kenya Kwanza MPs.
Gachagua, speaking on Monday, January 15, during the burial of Philip Tonui in Kapsio village, Bomet County, criticized the move, terming it premature succession politics.
Expressing his commitment to serve as the principal assistant to President William Ruto, Gachagua dismissed the MPs for engaging in what he deemed as unnecessary political maneuvers.
“I was sworn in as the principal assistant to the President, and I will do just that. I will not be dissuaded from that by engaging in unnecessary and uncalled-for succession politics.
”They do not seem to understand that I do not mix issues and always remain focused on one item and ensure I deliver on it. For now, it is delivering as the Deputy President. Nothing else,” Gachagua asserted.
The Deputy President rebuffed his critics, emphasizing his dedication to fulfilling his mandate. He underscored that engaging in premature succession debates was disrespectful to both the President and himself, as these discussions diverted attention from their responsibilities and goals.
Gachagua firmly rejected calls for a meeting with MPs opposing his leadership, pointing out that discussions around succession were premature, given that President Ruto’s government had only been in office for less than two years.
Encouraging leaders to shift their focus to service delivery and address the economic challenges facing Kenyans, Gachagua asserted, “The President and I are not fools. We know where we came from, where we are going, what is happening, and what we are doing. I will focus on assisting the President to succeed in his agenda for Kenyans.”
This follows last week’s proposal by Members of the National Assembly elected on the Kenya Kwanza ticket, endorsing Ndindi Nyoro as the potential successor to Gachagua in the 2027 General Election.
