A group of war veterans is advocating for the renaming of Kirigiti International Stadium, citing its historical significance as a site of Kenya’s struggle for independence.
On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, the Kiambu County Mau Mau Liberation War Veterans Association submitted a petition to the Kiambu County Assembly, urging the renaming of the recently built stadium.
Led by Mau Mau veteran Gitu wa Kahengeri, the Association argues that the site holds significant historical and symbolic value in Kenya’s struggle for independence.
“We are therefore petitioning the Assembly to consider renaming the stadium from Kirigiti International stadium to ‘Mau Mau Kirigiti International Stadium’ or ‘Kirigiti Mau Mau International Stadium,” the petition said.
The Association brings to the attention of the Assembly that the grounds were initially referred to as Kiharo Gia Thathi-ini, which translates to “the cradle of resistance wars and vigorous agitation of freedom against British colonialism in Kenya” in Kikuyu.
The war veterans emphasize that Kiharo Gia Thathi-ini holds a profound historical significance, deserving recognition in honour of the hundreds of Mau Mau fighters who endured various atrocities while detained there.
The construction of Kirigiti International Stadium has been entirely financed by the national government, with an approximate cost of Sh600 million. The stadium boasts a seating capacity of around 15,000 and is presently 95 percent complete. Situated in Kiambu Sub County, within Kiambu County, the stadium serves as a prominent landmark.
