Tragedy struck Mradi Village in Embakasi, Nairobi, as a gas plant explosion rocked the peaceful community. The aftermath revealed a grim toll: three lives lost and 222 individuals injured.
Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura, in a statement, explained that the incident occurred around 11:30 pm, triggered by a lorry carrying gas cylinders that erupted into a massive fireball, causing widespread destruction.
“Yesterday (Thursday) at around 11:30 pm, there was a huge explosion at Mradi area, in Embakasi, Nairobi County. One Lorry loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely,” Mwaura said.
The impact extended beyond the gas plant, reaching the nearby Oriental Godown, which was razed to the ground. The godown specialized in garments and textiles.
This catastrophe resulted in severe damage to vehicles, commercial properties, and numerous small and medium-sized businesses.
In response to this tragic event, Governor Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi County announced crucial measures to aid the affected. The county government swiftly waived all medical fees for the victims, emphasizing their commitment to supporting those in need during this challenging time.
“The County Government has also waived all medical fees at the County facilities attending to the injured and bereaved,” Sakaja announced.
Relief efforts, spearheaded by local authorities in collaboration with various agencies, are underway to ensure the comfort and recovery of those affected.
Emergency response teams and disaster management units are on-site, providing essential support and managing the aftermath of the fire.
