Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday, ahead of the country’s General Elections scheduled for Wednesday.
Mr Kenyatta will be leading the African Union Election Observation Mission for the country’s upcoming polls to choose representatives for the National Assembly and the Provincial Legislature across all nine provinces.
The African Union Commission (AUC) recently appointed the retired president to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for the General Elections in the Republic of South Africa.
According to the AU, the mission will collaborate with governmental bodies, the Independent Electoral Commission, political entities, media outlets, civil society groups, and international representatives to ensure the elections are free and fair.
“Mr Kenyatta will be leading a team of experts and observers who will be responsible for monitoring various aspects of the electoral process, including polling and the tabulation of results,” the ex-President’s office said on Sunday.

The AUEOM consists of 60 short-term observers selected from AU-accredited ambassadors, officials from election management bodies, and members of civil society organizations across Africa.
It also includes African election experts, human rights specialists, gender and media experts, and representatives from youth organizations.
