Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) is appealing to President William Ruto to reconsider Stella Soi Lang’at whose nomination as Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage was rejected by the National Assembly Committee on Appointments.
The Committee observed in its report tabled in the August House on Wednesday that the nominee failed to demonstrate adequate knowledge of topical, administrative and technical issues touching on the Ministry.
“That the nominee is unsuitable for the position to which she was nominated as she was unable to respond satisfactorily to the queries raised during the approval hearing relating to Gender, Heritage and Culture,” read in part the committee report.
The women leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with what happened during the vetting, saying that the nominee is competent, and well educated but she was interrupted and panicked.
“Not all people can stand before a camera. The woman should be given another chance. Today there is an ongoing vetting she should be put on that list to be vetted afresh,” said MYWO Mombasa chapter Chairlady Afiya Rama at the Mama Ngina Water Front.
They argued that former Cabinet Secretaries whose nomination was rejected by the Committee on Appointments set a precedent after they were later saved by the house during voting and performed beyond expectations.
“Does Kenya want a woman who talks more without actions because one can talk less but a performer? Mama Stella was once a Deputy County Commissioner which clearly shows she works well with the community,” stated Rama.
The women said they don’t want a show-off person, talkative as they have seen many before who were eloquent but didn’t perform.
They therefore urged the President to reinstate Lang’at to the Gender docket as “she is fit and will deliver’.
They thanked the Head of State for nominating Hassan Joho to the Cabinet saying they expected him to be conscientious in his ministerial duty for the youth to get employment and the country to prosper.
The women said they were proud of CS Joho’s nomination which they noted would catapult him into national leadership.
“He should diligently execute his duties not to soil his reputation like his predecessors,” advised Rama.
On her part, MYWO Board Member Farida Seif said women have equal rights in the Kenya Kwanza administration thus Lang’at should be given a second chance.
“She is experienced and she can deliver. Some of the nominees who were vetted didn’t have experience like the woman but were approved. In one voice as women, we call for her re-nomination. We are 100 per cent sure she can deliver. We know her well,” said Seif.
Another MYWO member, Clarence Atieno, thanked the Head of State for nominating Lang’at whom she said should be given another job to serve Kenyans.
