Kenya stamped its authority as the region’s athletics powerhouse after its legislators clinched the highest number of gold medals in the sports at the ongoing East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Kampala, Uganda.
The country struck gold in the men’s 4x400m relay where overall Team Kenya captain and Bunge Sports Club Co-Chairperson Hon. Vincent Musyoka (Mwala) led Hon. David Ochieng (Ugenya) Hon. Dan Wanyama (Webuye West) and Hon. Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills) to victory, clocking 50.8 seconds in the race.
Hon. Kitur also bagged gold in the men’s 100m with an impressive time of 11.8 seconds at the games held at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Namboole.
In the women’s category, Hon. Catherine Omanyo (Busia County ) secured gold in the 100m race, crossing the finish line in 16.7 seconds.
Kenya also picked several silver medals. Hon. Musyoka finished second in the men’s 100m in 12.6 seconds. The women’s 4x400m relay team also finished second with a time of 1:26.0.
The women relay team comprised of Hon. Irene Kasalu (Kitui County), Hon. Flowrence Jematiah (Baringo County) and Hon. Betty Maina (Murang’a County), Nominated Senator Hon. Esther Okenyuri.
Hon. Phylis Bartoo (Moiben) claimed silver in the women’s 1500m, clocking 8:37.8, while Hon. Titus Lotee (Kacheliba) took silver in the men’s 1500m with a time of 5:24.0, narrowly behind the winner, Hon Acan Julius, who posted 5:23.5.
The country also won several Bronze medal. Hon. Mukunji Gitonga (Manyatta) finished third in the men’s 400m in 1:03.9.
In the same race, Hon. Joshua Kandie (Baringo Central) came in fourth at 1:06.05.
In the men’s 1500m, Hon. John Kaguchia (Mukurweini) clinched bronze, clocking 5:54.1.
Other strong performances included Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri who placed fourth in the women’s 100m in 20.1 seconds. Hon. Bartoo returned to finish fourth in the women’s 400m in 1:55.1, while Nominated Senator Beth Syengo completed the race in 2:20.3.
In the men’s 1500m, Hon. Joshua Kimilu (Kaiti) finished in 6:22.7, Hon. John Paul Mwirigi ( Igembe South ) in 7:35.0, and newly elected Baringo Senator Kipruto Chemitei crossed in 7:49.7.
