Officers serving in Kenya’s disciplined forces are set to benefit from higher salaries after the government confirmed a pay rise targeting personnel in the National Police Service, the Kenya Prisons Service, and the National Youth Service.
The salary increment is part of a broader government plan to improve the welfare of officers working in the country’s security and paramilitary institutions. Officials say the move is intended to boost morale, improve service delivery, and recognise the role played by uniformed personnel in safeguarding the country and supporting national development.
According to the State Department for Internal Security, the pay rise is being implemented through a phased programme that began in 2024 and is expected to be completed in July 2026. Once fully implemented, officers across the police, prisons, and NYS departments will earn higher monthly salaries depending on their ranks.
Speaking on the reforms, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the government is committed to improving the working conditions of officers serving in disciplined services.
“The final phase of the salary review for police, prison, and NYS officers will take effect in July, completing the three-year plan aimed at improving the welfare of officers,” said Omollo.
He noted that the review is part of wider reforms within the security sector aimed at strengthening professionalism and ensuring officers remain motivated in the course of their duties.

Under the new salary structure, the lowest cadres in the services will see their earnings increase significantly once the final phase of the adjustment is implemented. For instance, junior officers in the National Youth Service will see their salary range increase from the previous lower scale to a higher minimum and maximum monthly pay.
Similarly, officers in the National Police Service and warders in the Kenya Prisons Service will also benefit from the revised pay structure. The salary adjustments vary across different ranks, with some officers expected to receive increases amounting to several thousand shillings per month.
The government says improving the financial welfare of disciplined officers is essential to enhancing their effectiveness and ensuring stability within the services. Security experts have long argued that better remuneration can help reduce stress among officers and improve accountability in the security sector.
The National Youth Service plays a key role in training young Kenyans in discipline and vocational skills while also supporting national development projects such as infrastructure works and community programmes. Meanwhile, the National Police Service is responsible for maintaining law and order across the country, while the Kenya Prisons Service oversees correctional facilities and the rehabilitation of offenders.
Officials believe the salary review will not only improve the living standards of officers but also strengthen the institutions they serve.
