Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has joined the Linda Mwananchi movement, signalling a new political alignment in the Mt Kenya region as preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum.
Kang’ata, who recently parted ways with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), made the announcement during a rally at Kivulini Grounds in Thika, where opposition leaders criticised President William Ruto’s administration and urged Kenyans to vote for change in the next election.
Addressing supporters, the governor accused the government of failing to address the rising cost of living, unemployment and the challenges facing businesses across the country. He also faulted some flagship government programmes, including healthcare reforms and the affordable housing initiative, arguing that they have not adequately addressed citizens’ needs.
“People are tired of unfulfilled promises, the high cost of living and unemployment. As Linda Mwananchi we are ready to work with like-minded leaders to ensure change in 2027,” he said. “I also asked Sifuna to look for Wamunyoro (Rigathi Gachagua) and work together. I just want a better Kenya.”
Other leaders who attended the rally echoed calls for political unity and mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls. They accused the government of poor governance, corruption, police brutality, abductions and mismanagement of public resources.
Former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo urged Kenyans to unite in pursuit of change, while Siaya Governor James Orengo urged that support from the Mt Kenya region would remain crucial in determining the outcome of the next presidential election.
The rally was briefly disrupted by individuals suspected to be goons, causing a temporary interruption before normalcy was restored. Reports indicated concerns over security arrangements at the event, although police had not issued an official statement by the time of publication.
The Linda Mwananchi movement, which has recently expanded its activities across several Mt Kenya counties, is seeking to strengthen its presence in the region as political groups intensify mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 General Election.
