The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations into the invasion of All Saints’ Cathedral in Nairobi by suspected goons who disrupted a post-budget forum on Friday.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the police said detectives were reviewing CCTV footage captured during the incident, with two suspects already in custody as investigations continue.
“This incident will be investigated thoroughly, professionally, transparently, and impartially to ensure that all those involved are brought to justice. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” NPS said.
Police have also appealed to members of the public to share any information that could assist investigators by reporting to the nearest police station.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation, with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) calling on the Inspector General of Police to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
CCTV footage showed the disturbance began at the church entrance, where a group of men reportedly forced their way past security personnel before heading towards the conference area where a post-budget discussion was underway.
The first group arrived on motorcycles at about 9:39 a.m. and was later pushed back by police officers who responded to the scene. However, the attackers allegedly returned shortly after, this time entering the compound on foot and proceeding to the conference venue.
Security footage captured several individuals moving through the building, with some participants reportedly robbed as they attempted to flee. The group later disrupted proceedings by chanting slogans, forcing organisers to temporarily suspend the meeting.
Outside the church compound, a gunshot was reportedly fired as security officers attempted to disperse the intruders.
Investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to identify and apprehend all those involved in the incident.
