The High Court has suspended the appointment of a new Deputy President just hours after the Senate upheld the ousting of Rigathi Gachagua.

Justice Chacha Mwita said on Friday that no appointments to replace Mr Gachagua will take place until October 24.

In an urgent application filed by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, the matter has been referred to Chief Justice Martha Koome, who will select a panel to address the important constitutional issues raised.

“In the meantime, a conservatory order has been issued to suspend the Senate’s resolution regarding the impeachment charges against the Deputy President,” the judge explained.

The case file will now be forwarded to the Chief Justice for further orders and actions.

President William Ruto had, on Friday morning, nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as Gachagua’s successor, and the National Assembly swiftly approved his appointment.
