Democratic Republic of Congo has sealed its place in the FIFA inter-confederation playoffs after beating Nigeria 4-3 on penalties at Stade Prince Heritier Moulay Hassan in Rabat on Sunday, November 16.
Congo DR dominated for much of the game, but Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali scored late in the second half, sending the match into extra time. The Nigerian defense held firm, forcing the teams to settle the outcome on penalties.
With this victory, Congo becomes the third team to progress to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, joining Bolivia and New Caledonia, with three more slots remaining for the six-team playoff in March next year, which will finalize the 48-team field for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nine African countries have already qualified directly from the CAF group stage: Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia.
The intercontinental playoff will feature two teams from the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and one team each from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), and the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).
