The government has allocated Sh25 billion to compensate landowners affected by the construction of the Narok-Bomet-Kisumu section of the Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Kenya Railways Corporation Managing Director Philip Mainga said the National Land Commission (NLC) was conducting public participation ahead of compensation, with land valuations and negotiations ongoing.
He said Kenya Railways had secured early access to some sections of land as discussions with affected property owners continued.
During a public participation meeting, Kapkesosio village resident Stephen Ruto welcomed the railway, saying it would connect Bomet County to other parts of Kenya and the wider East African region.
Phase 2B construction is under way in some areas, including Narok, where the railway will cover approximately 98 kilometres. The route will also pass through Bomet, Nyamira, Kericho, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.
Mainga said the government planned to establish logistics hubs and value-addition facilities along the route to support local industries, including agriculture, livestock, tourism, tea and fishing.
The railway is also expected to improve the transportation of tea, coffee and sugar to the Port of Mombasa for export, while creating jobs and business opportunities.
President William Ruto launched construction on March 19, 2026. The project is expected to take approximately two years, with Narok station scheduled to be partially complete by June 2027.
