Kenya is expected to sign a miraa deal with Somalia on May 8, 2024, ensuring steady economic benefits and providing a legal framework for the khat trade, Agriculture and Livestock Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi has said.
According to Mr Linturi, the cash crop is the backbone of the economy in Meru, significantly contributing to the livelihoods of many residents in the county.
The CS made these remarks at Thamare Primary School in Igembe Central Sub-county during the burial of the two daughters of Deputy Speaker of Meru County Assembly and Njia Ward member of the County Assembly, Ali Mwenda, who were involved in a road accident on April 2nd.
The accident claimed the lives of the two daughters and left their father in a wheelchair.
Mr Linturi was accompanied by Deputy Speaker of the Senate Kathuri Murungi, former Meru County Governor Peter Munya, Igembe Central Member of Parliament Dan Kiili, Meru County Deputy Governor Mutua M’Ethingia, and other dignitaries.
