A Catholic priest from Nyandarua has been found dead under suspicious circumstances, sending shockwaves across the nation.
Law enforcement agencies are now pursuing leads to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
Father John Maina Ndegwa, who was serving at Igwamiti Catholic Parish in the Diocese of Nyahururu, was discovered on May 15, 2025, by the roadside in Kikopey, Gilgil.
According to Gilgil Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) chief Rahamad Wasilwa, the priest’s body appeared to have been dumped at the location, raising suspicions that he could have been killed elsewhere.
“It is possible that the Catholic priest was killed somewhere else and his body dumped here. Detectives have launched an investigation, but the autopsy report will provide the full details that will be used in the inquiry,” Wasilwa said.
Nyandarua Senator John Methu expressed his sorrow over the sudden death, recalling how Father Maina had warmly received former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his team during the parish’s 25th Family Day celebrations on April 27.
“We’re in deep shock to learn of the very sudden death of Rev. Father John Maina Ndegwa of Igwamiti Parish. Father Maina hosted Rigathi Gachagua and our team a fortnight ago for the parish’s Family Day. May your soul, my good friend, rest in peace,” he said.
A section of Kenyans expressed anger and disappointment over the manner in which the renowned priest was murdered. Many have called for thorough investigations to reveal the truth and details of what transpired.
The DCI detectives are working closely with Safaricom to establish who communicated with the priest before his murder.
People who physically interacted with the priest during his final moments will be considered persons of interest in the investigation.
