Embu Town was thrown into chaos on Tuesday morning as police clashed with protesters over the arrest of Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji.
Gitonga Mukunji was arrested on Monday under unclear circumstances in connection with the unrest that occurred in parts of Embu County during the Saba Saba demonstrations.
Tension gripped the town for hours, with businesses closed, roads blocked, and a heavy police presence trying to contain the situation.
Protesters, mostly young people, set fires and blocked key roads, including the Embu-Meru and Embu-Kiritiri highways near the NHIF offices, paralysing traffic and halting normal operations.
His lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, claimed the legislator was arrested at around 3 pm and booked at Kibii Police Station at 3:53 pm under Occurrence Book (OB) number 06/07/07/2025.
Mukunji was later picked up by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based at Juja Police Station.
The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Kibii Police Station indicated that the MP could face charges for incitement to violence. The National Police Service issued a statement on Monday evening confirming that Mukunji had indeed been arrested.
“A number of suspects have been arrested, including Gitonga Mukunji, MP for Manyatta Constituency,” the statement read.
The unclear circumstances around his arrest have sparked speculation and growing public outrage, especially among his supporters in Manyatta and across Embu County.
