The final hours of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo before his fatal crash have emerged, as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) launches a full-scale investigation.
According to the DCI, the crash occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at Karai, Naivasha, involving Jirongo’s car, registration number KCZ 350C, and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration number KCU 576A.
The collision, described as head-on, left Jirongo fatally injured and his vehicle scattered about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a halt roughly 50 metres away.
Investigators say newly reviewed CCTV footage from the nearby Eagol Petrol Station provides a second-by-second account of Jirongo’s last movements. The footage shows that at 2:18:40am, he drove into the station from Nairobi but did not stop to refuel.

Less than half a minute later, his car paused briefly at the station’s exit before making a right turn back toward Nairobi at 2:19:19am. Only six seconds later, at 2:19:25am, the PSV bus collided with his vehicle.
A multi-agency team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory has been deployed to secure evidence and examine the crash site. Statements have also been recorded from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, who witnessed the events unfold.

The PSV bus driver, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, was interrogated and released on cash bail, with orders to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, as investigations into causing death by dangerous driving continue.
Detectives are retracing Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including statements from individuals he met earlier that night at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi. Passengers aboard the PSV bus and other potential witnesses along the highway are also being questioned.
The DCI said a full police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) once investigations are complete.
Meanwhile, the agency expressed condolences to Jirongo’s family and assured the public that the probe would be conducted thoroughly, impartially, and in strict accordance with the law.
