Ruto fingers billionaire baron Rai for undermining sugar reforms

The President said he is determined rout specific groups he says are manipulating various sectors in the country.

President William Ruto accused Jaswant Singh Rai, the chairman of Kabras Sugar, for alleged involvement in questionable dealings that have impacted the sugar sector. Ruto subtly suggested that Rai might have played a role in undermining efforts to rejuvenate the Mumias Sugar factory and insinuated his connection to cartels.

While addressing Bungoma residents, Ruto emphasized his commitment to streamlining various sectors and combating entities that stifle progress and exploit the nation. He specifically addressed the challenges facing the sugar industry and named Rai while expressing his resolve not to be swayed by any influence.

”I will make sure everything is streamlined. Even for those cartels, do not worry that anyone of Indian descent will convince me otherwise; it is impossible. I heard of Rai. Who is Rai? No, that’s not possible. This is people’s property, and will not allow anyone to take advantage,” Ruto said.

During his address, Ruto also raised concerns about the contrasting financial performance of privately owned sugar manufacturers and their publicly owned counterparts. He spoke of the government’s significant investments in state-owned sugar mills that seemingly struggle to yield returns while private mills manage to operate profitably.

“We want a formula that will bring government and private sector together so that Nzoia company can be sustainable and help locals and the government,” Ruto stated.

The President underscored the need for collaboration between the government and the private sector to ensure the viability of businesses like the Nzoia company. Ruto argued that the challenges faced by government-owned mills are primarily rooted in management issues, emphasizing the importance of more effective management strategies.

Rai, a prominent figure known for his political connections and with substantial interests in edible oils and sugar, recently made headlines following his abduction. CCTV footage showed the businessman’s Toyota Landcruiser being blocked and forcibly stopped by a group of individuals driving a double-cab pick-up. The occupants of Rai’s car were abducted and driven away. Rai was released unharmed by his alleged abductors, his lawyers later confirmed.
