Igonga is currently an Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions
President William Ruto has nominated Renson Mulele Ingonga as the next Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The President’s choice was communicated via a memorandum forwarded to the National Assembly on Thursday, August 17. In the memo, President Ruto underscored Ingonga’s qualifications as a seasoned legal practitioner, highlighting his exemplary record and unwavering dedication to the legal profession.
With a notable career trajectory, Renson Mulele Ingonga is a senior assistant DPP overseeing the North Eastern region at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). Having been admitted to the bar in 2005, Ingonga is a seasoned legal practitioner.
Ingonga’s selection from a pool of 48 applicants is a testament to his exceptional qualifications and experience. Notably, many applicants were already deeply entrenched within the ODPP, serving in various capacities, making Ingonga’s nomination a testament to his exceptional standing within the legal fraternity.
Assuming the role of Director of Public Prosecutions marks a significant responsibility for Ingonga as he steps into the shoes of his predecessors, Keriako Tobiko and Noordin Haji. The latter recently assumed a new mantle as the Director-General of the National Intelligence Service (NIS), leaving an indelible mark on the legal landscape.
The road ahead for the newly nominated DPP is undoubtedly challenging as he takes on the task of rebuilding the confidence of Kenyans in the justice system. The recent withdrawal of high-profile cases has raised eyebrows and eroded public trust, resulting in a staggering loss of Sh10 billion due to halted cases.
