The Moja Expressway Company, responsible for managing the Nairobi Expressway, has temporarily suspended toll services at the Mlolongo, Syokimau, and SGR Toll Stations. This decision comes in the wake of ongoing demonstrations in the area.
In a statement shared on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, the company assured its clients that efforts were underway to restore normalcy to the affected expressway section.
Amidst the protests, a group of demonstrators succeeded in pulling down the barrier near Mlolongo, Nairobi, disrupting the flow of traffic along the expressway and further increasing accidents risk. This act has further complicated the situation and prompted authorities to take additional measures to ensure public safety.
The Moja Expressway Company has urged all motorists travelling along the Westlands-Mlolongo route to exit from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Furthermore, motorists heading from Mlolongo to Westlands are advised to join the road from the JKIA Toll Station safely. These alternative routes have been designated to mitigate the inconvenience caused by the ongoing demonstrations.
Meanwhile, the anti-government demonstrations, organised by the Opposition, have sparked clashes between protesters and law enforcement agencies across various parts of the country. In Nairobi’s Mathare area, police officers engaged with protesters in running battles, deploying teargas to disperse the crowds gathered to protest against the high cost of living. Similar scenes unfolded in Kibera, where police dispersed pockets of demonstrators who had taken to the streets.
The demonstrations have not been confined to Nairobi alone. In Mombasa and Kisumu cities and Migori, Nyamira, and Emali towns, authorities have witnessed comparable clashes between protesters and police. Teargas has been lobbed to disperse the crowds and maintain order.
The Moja Expressway Company has assured the public that it is actively working with relevant authorities to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution and adhere to the designated alternative routes until the situation stabilises.
