Supreme Court judge Ibrahim Mohammed has died at a hospital in Nairobi while battling an undisclosed illness, Chief Justice Martha Koome has confirmed.
Justice Ibrahim is reported to have died at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, where he was receiving treatment, at around 4:30 pm on Wednesday, December 17.
Sources say he had been receiving treatment in India before doctors recommended he return to Kenya for his final days.
The judge has been eulogized by his colleagues as a trailblazing advocate, human rights defender, and public-spirited lawyer.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the JSC during this moment of immense loss,” Justice Koome said in a statement on Wednesday.

Justice Ibrahim was appointed to the inaugural Supreme Court of Kenya on 16 June 2011. Until his death, he served as the Supreme Court representative to the Judicial Service Commission and chaired the Judiciary Committee on Elections.
A graduate of the University of Nairobi, Justice Ibrahim began his legal career in private practice, becoming the first Kenyan Somali admitted to the Bar. He later founded his own firm, specializing in civil, constitutional, and commercial law.
He was a committed defender of minority rights and social justice, notably opposing discrimination against the Somali community, and was once detained for supporting pro-democracy efforts under the one-party regime.
Justice Ibrahim served on the High Court from 2003, including as Resident Judge in Eldoret and Mombasa, before his elevation to the Supreme Court.
Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in legal and human rights organizations, leaving a lasting legacy as an advocate for justice and equality.
