The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has announced 36,505 vacancies for teacher promotions.

Speaking at the ongoing conference of the Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association in Mombasa, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia thanked the government’s commitment for allocating Sh1 billion in the 2023/2024 fiscal year to facilitate teacher promotions.

“The commission has recently posted advertisements for 36,505 teacher promotion opportunities, with a focus on allocating 17,914 positions to primary school teachers across different grades,” Ms Macharia said.

Macharia pointed to a shortage in Special Needs Education roles, underscoring the importance of candidates attending scheduled interviews starting from December 4.

Macharia emphasized the need for adaptability, and encouraged unemployed teachers to explore opportunities beyond their home counties, urging them to “embrace responsibilities without hesitation. President William Ruto’s administration allocated funds for the recruitment of 56,000 teachers last year.”

She stressed the need to address geographical imbalances, highlighting the recent recruitment exercise where 1,123 positions remained vacant nationwide.

“We shouldn’t face such shortages, especially when there are numerous unemployed teachers in other counties perfectly suited for these roles,” Macharia emphasized, advocating for a more equitable distribution of opportunities.
