A senior police officer in Belgut Constituency, Kericho County, was taken to hospital early Tuesday after being found hugging a tree inside a police station while in full uniform.
Police described the incident as unusual and said Kennedy Wanjala, Officer Commanding Sossiot Police Station, was referred for medical evaluation.
A report filed on January 20, 2026, stated that colleagues from the Operations Control and Communications Department (OCPD) and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Office (SCCIO) discovered Wanjala embracing a tree at the station.
Senior officers responded promptly, separated him from the tree, and escorted him for further care.
Authorities noted that Wanjala appeared to be in emotional distress, prompting the referral to medical professionals rather than disciplinary action. Welfare officers were involved to ensure his safety.
The incident coincides with a growing trend in Kenya, where some people participate in tree-hugging challenges promoted on social media. Originally an environmental campaign, the activity encourages engagement with nature, though health authorities warn that prolonged participation can carry physical and emotional risks.
At the scene, both colleagues and members of the public expressed concern for Wanjala’s well-being. The episode sparked online discussion, with some offering support while others questioned the appropriateness of the behavior for a uniformed officer.
Police said a follow-up report on Wanjala’s condition and any medical advice will be released in the coming days.
