The University of Nairobi Council has once again sent Vice Chancellor Stephen Kiama on a compulsory leave and directed Prof Ayub Njoroge to take over in acting capacity, setting the stage for a looming showdown.
In a press statement, the council chair Amukowa Anangwe expressed concerns about what he termed as the continued harassment, intimidation and misuse of staff and resources by unathorised persons, adding that Prof. Kiama ought to be on leave.
“The council wishes to inform the university community and all the concerned persons that the decision made on the 19th of April 2024, granting Professor Stephen Kiama Gitahi leave with immediate effect, remains in force,” Mr.Anangwe said.
Prof. Kiama has however disputed the council’s decision to send him on compulsory leave, terming it unlawful and that he will continue to discharge his duties as the VC.
The council also halted Kiama’s recent administrative changes and asked the staff affected to report back to their previous posts, stating that the “attendant terms and conditions of service of the said staff remain unaltered.”
“Fresh letters authorizing the performance of duties in 24 administrative positions have been issued to respective university officers as per Council resolution made on April 19, 2024, and this was duly communicated to the university community,” Anangwe said.
The council warned that any actions, communications, or directions that violate resolutions or defy its authority shall be regarded as gross misconduct and insubordination and any culprits will be held personally accountable and may face disciplinary action.
