US Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to visit Kenya next month after attending a summit in South Africa, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Monday.
There were no immediate details on what Vance might discuss in Kenya, which is one of Washington’s closest allies in Africa and has said it hopes to reach a trade deal with the United States by the end of this year.
“The visit to Kenya will run from November 24 to November 27,” the source said, without providing further details.
The relationship between the two countries has not been without tension. U.S. officials have recently raised concerns over Nairobi’s efforts to strengthen ties with Beijing.
President Donald Trump is sending Vance in his place to attend the Group of 20 summit in Johannesburg from November 22 to 23. South Africa, which currently holds the rotating G20 presidency, is due to hand over the role to the United States after the meeting.
Kenya was designated a major non-NATO ally by the United States in 2024, highlighting the strategic importance Washington places on its partnership with Nairobi. At the same time, officials in Kenya have had to balance maintaining strong U.S. relations with expanding economic engagement with China.
Vance’s office and Kenya’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
