Veteran politician and former Karachuonyo Member of Parliament Phoebe Muga Asiyo has died at the age of 93.
Asiyo passed away on Thursday in a hospital in North Carolina, United States, following a stroke, according to her family.
Her son, Caesar Asiyo, confirmed the news, stating that she died while receiving care from her children.
“Phoebe died in the hospital while my brother and two sisters were taking care of her,” he said.
He added that his mother had suffered a stroke a few months ago while visiting family in the U.S.
“My mother developed a stroke not long ago when she was in the U.S. At that age, it was difficult for the medics to manage the condition.”
Describing the loss as a major blow, Caesar appealed to Kenyans to join the family in mourning.
“Her death is a serious setback for the family, and I call on Kenyans to join us in mourning her,” he added.
Asiyo was first elected MP for Karachuonyo in 1980 and served until 1983. She later reclaimed the seat in 1992 on a Ford Kenya ticket, serving until 1997.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga mourned Asiyo as a trailblazer who opened doors for women in leadership.
“It is very sad that Kenya has lost a trailblazer. Asiyo became an MP at a time when it was difficult for a woman to walk that path. Many women faced obstacles, but she managed to make it,” Wanga said.
She further praised Asiyo’s mentorship, stating, “Many female leaders, including me, acquired their seats because of her guidance. On behalf of the people of Homa Bay and my family, I convey my condolences to her family during this difficult time.”
Homa Bay County Bunge la Wenye Nchi Speaker Walter Opiyo described Asiyo as a respected source of political wisdom.
“Asiyo was a source of wisdom for both female and male politicians who sought knowledge on various political matters. We have lost a resourceful leader,” he said.
