Juja Member of Parliament (MP) George Koimburi has been found alive, though in critical condition, in a coffee plantation in Kiambu County after being abducted by unknown individuals outside a church in Mugutha on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
The MP was initially taken to Plainsview Hospital near Ruiru town for emergency medical attention before being transferred to Nairobi Hospital for specialised treatment. Hospital officials have confirmed that he is currently undergoing treatment, with his condition listed as critical but stable.
In a video circulating online, Koimburi is seen lying on the ground, visibly injured and in distress. According to eyewitnesses and statements from his wife, Ann Koimburi, two men joined a group of well-wishers greeting the MP after the church service, before suddenly overpowering him and forcing him into a silver Subaru Forester bearing civilian registration plates.
This was not the first attempt to seize the MP. Just days earlier, unknown individuals had tried to apprehend Koimburi moments after he had issued bursary cheques at Gachororo Primary School in Juja. He narrowly escaped by fleeing on a motorbike.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has categorically denied any involvement in the incident, although it confirmed that Koimburi has been sought since Friday in connection with alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
Koimburi’s alleged abduction and assault took place amid heightened political tension between the Democratic Change Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and the government.
Notably, on Saturday—a day prior to the incident—a DCP meeting in Kakamega ended in chaos after police officers disrupted the event and clashed with party leaders, including the deputy party leader, Cleophas Malala.
