A day after The Nairobi Law Monthly published a commentary challenging Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to address the challenges facing the sport, new allegations have emerged linking national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to a match fixing.
In a leaked video released on Thursday, March 27, a man’s voice is heard instructing Matasi to ensure that he concedes a goal within the first half of a game. The voice is believed to be that of a match-fixing agent, who is heard promising the goalkeeper money from a third party on condition that he ensures a goal is scored.
Matasi, whose face appears in the video, plays for Police FC and the national team, Harambee Stars. After the allegations appeared, Kenyans on social media started sharing videos in which Matasi was seen making costly errors while playing in Kenya’s national colours.
In one video, the keeper conceded three goals in the first half in a game between Harambee Stars and The Lions of Cameroon. Police FC have asked anyone with evidence of match-fixing against the player to submit it to the team’s management for it to take the necessary action.
Other sports officials said that the keeper remains innocent until proven guilty, arguing that there was not enough evidence in the video to convict him.
Meanwhile, FKF is expected to announce whether it will suspended him ahead of this weekend’s matches.
Some Kenyans have, however, demanded that he be banned indefinitely.
