Peter Kawanjiru, a prominent political figure and ally of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was allegedly abducted by police in Limuru, Kiambu County, on June 30, 2025, according to claims circulating on social media and statements attributed to his family.

Kawanjiru, who ran for the Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in 2022 under the Jubilee Party and currently serves as the Democratic Change Party (DCP) Kiambu Youth Coordinator, was reportedly taken from an area near the Deputy Officer’s (D.O.) office in Limuru.

According to the family, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) were spotted in more than 10 vehicles at Kawanjiru’s residence on the evening of June 30, 2025, in an apparent attempt to abduct him. The officers allegedly presented no warrant and gave no explanation for the attempted arrest.

“They said they were from DCI Kiambu Road and were looking for someone named Kawanjiru. When we refused to open, they started hitting the door with metal rods,” a family member said.

Kawanjiru has been outspoken in his opposition to the Kenya Kwanza administration and is known for promoting the anti-government ‘Wantam’ chants.

“I asked them, ‘Has he killed someone? Has he stolen?’ but they said, ‘We’re just doing the job we were sent to do,’” the family member added.

The family reported that tensions escalated when the officers allegedly fired live rounds into the air, forcing nearby residents to disperse. The standoff reportedly lasted more than four hours.

Since his disappearance, the family’s efforts to trace his whereabouts have been unsuccessful. They have visited multiple police stations in Kiambu and Nairobi, but no officer has provided any information or confirmed his detention.

This incident follows a pattern of reported abductions involving political figures and activists in Kenya. Blogger Ndiangui Kinyagia, for example, was abducted from his home in Kinoo, Nairobi, and has been missing for more than 10 days.
