The government has issued a set of stringent orders for operators of short-term rentals, including popular platforms like Airbnb, in response to recent safety concerns.

In the meeting chaired by the Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo, the statement indicated that security guards would be required to also note the time of entry and exit, along with the temporary retention of visitors’ identification documents.

These directives outlined in a statement issued on Wednesday, January 31, indicated that effective immediately, security guards at short-term accommodations should record the identification details of every individual entering the premises.

To bolster security measures, operators are also required to install CCTV surveillance systems, ensuring continuous and up-to-date footage.

An essential component of these new regulations is the mandatory registration of all short-term accommodation rentals with the Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA).

This move aims to uphold the highest standards of safety and security for guests. From February 5th, 2024, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) will conduct rigorous inspections of all registered properties in collaboration with the TRA.

The government has emphasized its intention to coordinate with booking platforms to restrict unregistered rentals. Severe penalties, including fines and revocation, will be imposed in cases of non-compliance with these new directives.

Encouraging collaboration, Resident Associations are urged to work closely with law enforcement agencies for effective enforcement. This involves sharing information, conducting joint inspections, and coordinating responses to violations of safety standards within the short-term rental sector.

The government’s initiative underscores a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals utilizing short-term rental services.

In addition to these measures, the government has called for increased public awareness and action to address the global issue of violence against women. It emphasizes collaboration at all levels, including government, communities, individuals, and international actors, to create a safer environment for women and hold perpetrators accountable.

The Director of Criminal Investigations has formed a specialized team, signaling a commitment to rigorous enforcement and the creation of a safer space for everyone.
