Kenya Railways (KR) announced the full resumption of cargo operations at the Port of Mombasa, which had bee halted due to disruptions caused by heavy rains.
In a recent statement, KR highlighted the successful completion of vital interventions along the Mariakani-Mombasa Terminus stretch, which had been adversely affected, necessitating the temporary suspension of operations.
The repair work, now concluded, has restored normalcy, enabling all Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) trains to seamlessly resume their scheduled operations.
“Loading and unloading of cargo at the Port of Mombasa has also commenced, and we are now working round the clock to minimize any delays,” affirmed the agency.
The Mariakani to Mombasa Terminus had faced closure in the wake of El Nino rains triggering landslides, prompting Kenya Railways to suspend freight trains while allowing passenger trains with reduced speed limitations.
Initially, the organisation had communicated operational changes in response to floods, wash-aways, and landslides in Mombasa county, causing unexpected delays in cargo evacuation and deliveries.
A landslide along the SGR corridor between Mombasa Terminus and Mariakani led to the closure of the section for freight trains, though passenger trains were permitted under restricted speed and rigorous supervision.
Ongoing floods continued to disrupt train schedules, affecting passenger train departures and arrivals at Mombasa Terminus, necessitating additional safety measures.
Kenya Railways reassured customers of ongoing efforts to swiftly restore normal services and reinforced their emergency plan to address any natural challenges without compromising safety.
