A 43-year-old Kenyan woman has been arrested in Mumbai after allegedly smuggling cocaine-filled capsules inside her body, Indian authorities said.
Florence Indangasi was intercepted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport upon arrival from Nairobi, following a tip-off received by India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).
Although no drugs were found in her luggage or clothing, she allegedly confessed during interrogation to having swallowed six capsules containing narcotics.
She was taken to JJ Hospital after the Esplanade Court granted permission for medical examination. Doctors retrieved six pellet-shaped capsules from her stomach.
Tests later confirmed the pellets contained 665.5 grams of cocaine. Indangasi was formally arrested, and investigations into her trafficking network are ongoing.
Officials believe she may be part of a wider smuggling ring based in Kenya. “It appears she was part of a wider drug smuggling racket operating from Kenya,” said a source close to the investigation.
Her arrest comes amid growing concern over Kenyan nationals’ involvement in international drug trafficking. On April 3, another Kenyan woman was arrested at an Indian airport with 1.7 kilograms of cocaine, valued between Sh225 million and Sh300 million.
On May 19, yet another Kenyan woman was caught at the same Mumbai airport with 1.57 litres of liquid cocaine hidden in cosmetic bottles, worth an estimated Sh238 million.
