Nairobi will experience major road closures this weekend to accommodate the fourth edition of the Nairobi City Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, July 6.
Traffic disruptions are expected to commence at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5, and will remain in effect until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, due to the anticipated participation of over 15,000 runners.
Among the key roads to be closed is the Nairobi Expressway, which will be shut down in both directions from James Gichuru to JKIA, starting Saturday at 10:00 p.m. until Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
Other roads expected to be affected on Sunday include the following:
-
- Waiyaki Way (inner lanes): Closed from 12:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. between Musa Gitau Road and the entrance to the expressway.
- Mombasa Road & Southern Bypass (Likoni Road crossing): Closed from 12:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., affecting roundabouts and all city entries and exits.
- Uhuru Highway: Closed from 12:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in two sections — between Southern Bypass and Lang’ata Roundabout, and between Bunyala Roundabout and Kenyatta Avenue.
- Kenyatta Avenue: Closed from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., particularly between PanAfric Hotel and Uhuru Highway.
The reason for the extensive closures on Sunday morning is the range of events set to take place during the city marathon.
In addition to the main event — the 42-kilometre marathon — there will be a 21-kilometre half marathon, starting at 7:30 a.m., and the 11.7-kilometre expressway run, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
City residents and visitors are urged to familiarize themselves with the closure schedule and plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience. Authorities have emphasized that these measures are essential for ensuring the safety of both runners and spectators.
