The government through the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) has announced plans to install new traffic cameras and traffic signals in major highways and roads in Nairobi.
Kura, in a tender notice published on its website, said that they will begin the installation of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS), after it received USD 61 million (Sh8.4 billion) loan to facilitate the process.

The authority says that it also intends to install signal controllers, vehicle enforcement systems, vehicle detection systems and variable message signs with the funds.
“The government of Kenya has received a loan from the Export-Import Bank of Korea from the resources of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of the Republic of Korea in the amount of USD 61 Million (Sixty-One Million US Dollars),” Kura said in the notice.
“The funds are toward the cost of the Nairobi ITS establishment and junctions, improvement Project [Phase I] and intends to apply a portion of the proceeds of this loan to payments under the contract for Design and Build for the Nairobi ITS Establishment and Junctions Improvement
Project [Phase I],” it added.
The surveillance system, the agency added, will include about 20 close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at various road junctions in the capital.
Once installed, Kura says that it intends to use the new system to help assist the flow of traffic on major highways and roads. The systems will also provide additional security to drivers, commuters and other road users.
“The Project Executing Agency, Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) now invites sealed bids from eligible bidders for the implementation of the project. Bidders will also supply and install hardware and software to house the ITS equipment and operate the new traffic management system at the TMC building,” Kura said.
“The project also involves the completion of the detailed design of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) building and the implementation of the construction works with fixtures, furniture, equipment and other facilities to operate the TMC building,”
it added.
The design and build works are expected to take a period of two years and six months from the award of the tender date.
“After the completion, the contractor shall dispatch experts for two years to support and assist the Employer’s sustainable mandate,” Kura said in the notice.
The road agency had earlier indicated Thika Road is one of the major highways that is set to benefit from the project among other key roads within the capital, Nairobi.
