Learning in five public universities could potentially be disrupted soon if lecturers carry out their threat to go on strike over what they term unjustifiable salary delays.

According to the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), out of the 40 universities in the country, only the Technical University of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Taita Taveta University, Kenyatta University, and Moi University receive their salaries late without convincing explanations.

UASU said the dons have either not received their salaries or receive them late.

‘We’re asking the CS Education, Ezekiel Machogu: What’s happening in the universities?’ UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga asked, adding, ‘No salary, no work.’

Additionally, the union stated that their members have not received their May salaries, which is a violation of the law.

UASU also expressed concern about the growing frequency of delays, especially highlighting the late payment of April salaries, which were not disbursed until May 17.

‘The delay in salary payments has caused significant hardship to our members. It is affecting our ability to meet financial obligations such as servicing standing orders, mortgage payments, rents, and school fees,’ said UASU in a letter to Mr. Machogu.

The union has requested a meeting with CS Machogu on June 25 to address the issue.
