Cabinet secretaries are nominated by the president and require parliamentary approval. Once confirmed, they may be reshuffled at the president’s discretion.
Article 152 of the Constitution of Kenya outlines the process for the appointment, confirmation, and dismissal of cabinet secretaries. It stipulates that there must be at least 14 and no more than 22 cabinet secretaries.
Importantly, cabinet secretaries are not members of the Kenyan Parliament and must undergo vetting by a parliamentary committee prior to their appointment.
